ON THE HUNT FOR CONTEMPORARY MELANCHOLY
A guest post from Disappear Here film-maker, Emilia Moniszko.
Disappear Here places an artist in a unique position to explore the city through the prism of its architecture. The collaborative aspect of this project allowed me to expand my practice by forcing me to look beyond of my own understanding of the city and what an art piece should be.
By collaborating with two poets, Mab Jones and Leanne Bridgewater, I was exposed to different forms of poetry including more traditional writing, as well as poetry with elements of psychogeography.
For the two pieces in which I collaborated with Mab - 'O ring road' and 'Muscle-man-bone' I tried to recapture the city's modernist melancholy of the 70s and 80s, whilst implementing a contemporary dimension with elements of electronic music.
'Alice in Covland' produced in collaboration with Leanne Bridgewater, Kirk Hastings and Ian Todd examines Coventry through a perspective of its habitation values for city's newcomers, in this instance a fictional character of a rabbit. The film explores the urban scenes of the city rather than its key landmarks. The piece is tied together by a new wave indie track written by Kirk Hastings and Ian Todd featuring the poem of Leanne Bridgewater.
Disappear Here enabled me to re-analyse and re-assess my adoptive city, the way it operates and what values it presents through its diversity, both cultural and artistic.
